Safety in Motorcycle Helmet Use

Many people would still prefer to not wear helmets when they ride their motorcycle or scooter because they do not really think that they need them. One of the arguments they are said to have is that pedestrians or car drivers are not required to wear helmets, so why should bike riders be?

Over the years, manufacturers have come up with designs that create helmets to comply with regulation and not so much on the look appeal and then others have concentrated more on the look where helmets are smaller, trendier, have various openings, have thinner padding and multiple designs that do nothing but enhance the appearance of the helmet at the risk of the wearer.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization that has a variety of reports and statics for Motorcycle helmets and the Current US motorcycle and bicycle helmet laws dated December 2009.

Should I go for a looking cool bike helmets over safety?

Helmets aren’t hats that keep your head cool or look cool when you’re riding. They are supposed to absorb the impact of a collision instead of your skull. It should be able to let your head skid so your neck will not snap.

If you already have a helmet, check how long it will last and how it deteriorates over time. If the lining is plastic, it will dry out and be more brittle and will start coming apart at that stage.

How old is your helmet? It could be too old that the parts are starting to come off and put you at risk. If you were saved by that helmet from a previous accident, perhaps you should replace it because helmets were only designed for the first and only incident of impact to your head. It will not work well in the next incident even if you don’t see any damage on the surface. The price of a new helmet for the price of a life is a minimal cost factor.

If wearing a helmet is just not your thing, just think that accidents would never happen had people only seen them coming before they actually happen. There’s no telling what really happens next so prevention is still better than the maintenance of a broken or fractured skull or spine.

Always wear a helmet and protect yourself so you can continue enjoying your passion.
